LEE COUNTY
The Lee County Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs) members meet the third Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 7:30 pm to discuss topics of expressed interest from fellow athletes, fundraising opportunties and performing administrative duties, such as sending thank you and appreciation cards to those who donate and volunteer. Anyone interested in seeing what ALPs is about and/or becoming a member of ALPs are welcome to attend.

- Athlete Leaders, Valerie Poole and Michelle Nawrocki, along with their respective Speech Coaches, Anne Poole and Joyce Nawrocki, successfully completed Global Messenger Training in June 2011.

Athlete Leader William Saliva woke up at the crack of dawn to get ready for the opening kick off of the 2011 Law Enforcement Torch Run. Practicing his speech the entire way to the start of the awareness run, he was ready! In the attached pictures he is joined by Amanda Gutierrez, Lee County Special Olympics coordinator, as he delivers his speech as a Special Olympics Global Messenger...thanking law enforcement for their support and wishing them good luck and a safe run.

Athlete Leadership members Michelle Nawrocki, Valarie Poole and William Saliva, volunteered at this year’s Tip-A-Cop event held at and sponsored by Joe’s Crab Shack, just outside of downtown Fort Myers. They assisted patrons at the entrance and were escorted by Law Enforcement officers through the restaurant showing off ribbons and medals the athletes earned at both local, county, and state levels of competition, as well as thanking patrons for their support of Special Olympics.

 Athlete Leadership member William Saliva volunteered at this year’s Tip-A-Cop event held at Gulf Coast Town Center Red Robin in Fort Myers. He made rounds with the officers meeting and greeting patrons thanking them for their support of Special Olympics. William showed off his ribbons won earlier in the day at Area Games held in Charlotte County in the 100 meter sprint and running long jump.
- Athlete Leaders, Michelle Nawrocki and Valarie Poole, had a blast during the Torch Icon promotion with employees and management of Publix Supermarket located at Santa Barbara. The weekend of events raised awareness and acceptance of individuals with intellectual disabilities, while incorporating fun and fundraising to support Special Olympics.

Get Involved!
Mentors: We are currently recruiting mentors to assist in our Athlete Leadership Programs.
Speech Coaches: We are currently recruiting speeech coaches to assist in our Athlete Leadership Programs.
Global Messengers: If you want to be an ambassador and spokesperson for your county, and receive training to enhance your speaking abilities, this program is for YOU!
Athlete Leaders: We are always needing Athlte Leaders to be available for speaking engagements, fund-raising events, competitions, serve as committee members, and to participate on the County Input Council.
Athlete Volunteers: Athletes are always welcome to assist at competitios, family activities, fundraisers, school or agency activities, etc. This is an opportunity for athletes not currently involved in ALPs, to enjoy the ALPs experience.
