Sallarulo’s Race for Champions Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Delanie Ross / Special Olympics Florida
The 20th anniversary of Sallarulo’s Race for Champions brought South Florida together in a powerful show of community spirit. The 5K had nearly 600 participants, more than 300 VIPs, and more than 100 volunteers.
Taking place on the campus of Nova Southeastern University, the day was filled with celebrations for Special Olympics Florida athletes. All funds raised go toward Special Olympics Florida’s work in Broward County, supporting almost 9,000 athletes.
This year’s Race for Champions was made even more special when the event was presented with proclamations from the Broward County Commission and the Florida House of Representatives recognizing November 8, 2025, as Sallarulo’s Race for Champions Day. Race Founder Paul Sallarulo was also honored with the Volunteer Florida – Champion of Service Award presented by Sherry Wheelock, Special Olympics Florida’s President and CEO.
Since its founding, the Race for Champions has raised more than $10 million in support of Special Olympics Florida athletes. Paul’s son Patrick has trained and competed with Special Olympics Florida for more than two decades, and each year Patrick and his sister Samantha proudly serve as team captains for the race.
If you’re looking to support the event, there’s still time! The Race for Champions is accepting donations until December 31st. Head to Champions5k.org today to make your mark!
