Building Unified Communities

Special Olympics spreads compassion and acceptance in a way that can unite the world. Our goal is to awaken everyone — and every community — to each person’s common humanity. Understanding brings acceptance; acceptances bring peace. This vision of inclusion starts at the local level. It’s expanding on a global scale.

Communities of Support

Special Olympics creates communities of support everywhere we go.  Our trainings and competitions bring together athletes, coaches, volunteers, sponsors, fans and leaders of the community.

There are about 250 million people with intellectual disabilities around the world. Our goal is to reach out to every one of them -– and their families as well.  Special Olympics does this through a wide range of trainings, competitions, health screenings and fundraising events. We also create opportunities for families, community members, local leaders, businesses, law enforcement, celebrities, dignitaries and others to band together to change attitudes and support athletes.  Out global organization has helped bring about policies to improve education, health care, and employment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities all around the world.

Connecting Us All

Since 1968, we have have been building a movement to break down barriers – both on and off the field in health and education – all through the power of sport. The movement is rooted in the spirit of our founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who took a rebellious stand against the injustices faced by people with intellectual disabilities. Today, the fight for inclusion is more relevant than ever. People of all ages, races, genders, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities continue to face discrimination, ignorance, and disparagement. Just as Eunice Kennedy Shriver did, Special Olympics is setting a stake in the ground to create change, and today, our athletes are leading the way.

As we continue this movement, Special Olympics will build programming and actively engage people in our movement to create social change.  Special Olympics knows no boundaries. Through the spirit of generosity, inclusion, and volunteerism, we can connect our communities. In this way, we will build a stronger, safer world.
