Special Olympics leads the fight for inclusion
To mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, USA Today published a long piece on her fight to create a more inclusive and accepting world. Kennedy Shriver was the founder of Special Olympics, inspired by her sister Rosemary, who had intellectual disabilities.
The piece quotes Tim Shriver, the current Chairman of Special Olympics, and
includes an appearance from Special Olympics Florida athlete Chris
Nikic.
"My
mom saw beyond the appearance, beyond the label, beyond the stigma,”
Shriver said. “That came from her sister. She grew up loving someone
that the world didn’t. If you grow up that way, you have to learn how to
see beyond what the world sees. You have to learn that the judgments of
the world are not true, that they're a distortion."
