Special Olympics Florida athletes recently competed at the 5th Special Olympics European Open Triathlon Competition, held in Šamorín, Slovakia. The international event brought together Special Olympics athletes from around the world to compete in swimming, cycling, and running while celebrating determination, sportsmanship, and inclusion.

Representing Special Olympics Florida were athletes Ryan Aytona, Sergio Cano, and Shawn Rheaume, along with teammate Daniel Peacock and coaches Jerome Bareth, KC Northup, and Jeff Meister. From race preparation to the finish line, the group carried Special Olympics Florida’s spirit with them throughout the event.

The athletes delivered an impressive performance in Slovakia. Ryan Aytona earned third place overall and first place in Division C, Sergio Cano secured first place in Division E, and Shawn Rheaume finished fifth in Division C. Beyond the results, the experience gave each athlete the opportunity to compete against talented Special Olympics athletes from around the world.

“Racing in Slovakia was an honor,” Ryan said. “Competing independently without a Unified partner gave me the opportunity to trust in my training and rely on my abilities as an athlete.”

Throughout the competition, the athletes relied on their training and encouraged one another. Although each athlete competed individually, they approached the event as one team, supported every step of the way by coaches Jerome, KC, and Jeff. Together, they showed that preparation, trust, and support can make every athlete stronger.
